NCCS was introduced by MRSI in 2011 to replace the urban SEC system. NCCS unified the way marketing could segment the Indian consuming population across the urban and rural areas. With rapid change in the Indian economic environment, NCCS has seen a substantial growth in the upper classes and significant shrinkage in the lowest ones. MRSI appointed a committee to review the NCCS framework and if required create a new framework with a view towards stability of the segments. After lots of analysis and deliberations, the committee has proposed a new framework to segment Indian consumers called the Indian Socio Economic Classification (ISEC).
